Privacy Policy

MonkeyTranslation reads and processes words and the current word position in the Monkeytype practice area within your browser. It displays Chinese definitions, parts of speech, and pronunciation transcriptions alongside the corresponding English words. Processing takes place on your device. The extension does not upload practice content or settings to the developer or third parties.
This policy describes data processing by the MonkeyTranslation extension itself. MonkeyTranslation is an independent project and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Monkeytype.
1. Information processed
| Information | Purpose | Storage |
|---|---|---|
| Words in the Monkeytype practice area, including the current word, previously typed words, and upcoming words | Look up words in the bundled English–Chinese dictionary and display definitions and available pronunciation transcriptions beside the corresponding English words | Processed only in the running page and extension background memory. Lookup results are cached temporarily in page memory and are not written to persistent storage. |
| The active word marker, word element positions and dimensions, and the visibility of the practice area | Update the placement of Chinese text and pronunciation transcriptions as you type or scroll, without covering the English words | Processed only in the running page’s memory. No activity history or behavioral analytics are created. |
| The display toggle, whether Chinese text appears above or below words, font size, and opacity | Remember and apply display preferences. Pronunciation transcriptions automatically appear on the opposite side from the Chinese text. | Saved in chrome.storage.local in the browser on your device. Chrome Storage Sync is not used. |
If custom practice text appears in the Monkeytype practice area, the extension may also process that text locally as described above. The extension does not directly listen to or record keystrokes. It does not read account information, passwords, cookies, chat content, or your complete browsing history, and it does not save typing scores, learning history, or input logs.
2. Local lookups and data transmission
The English–Chinese dictionary is installed with the extension. The page script requests definitions and pronunciation transcriptions from the extension background through internal browser messages. The background reads only the dictionary file bundled in the extension. This process runs locally and does not call an external translation service. The dictionary preserves existing ECDICT pronunciations and supplements missing pronunciations at build time using recorded American English whole-word forms from CMUdict. These additions are packaged with the extension; queries are not sent to either dictionary provider. Displaying pronunciation transcriptions requires no additional permissions and creates no additional external data transmission.
The extension has no server or backend account system, requires no registration or API key, and uses no analytics, trackers, advertisements, or remote code. It does not send, sell, or share practice content, active word positions, lookup caches, or display settings with the developer or third parties. The developer cannot remotely view this information through the extension.
Clicking “Practice on Monkeytype” opens the Monkeytype website. That website, the Chrome Web Store, and the web service hosting this privacy policy may process their own access data under their respective policies. Data processing by these independent services is separate from the extension’s local dictionary lookup feature.
3. Retention and deletion
Practice words, the current word position, and lookup results are used only in runtime memory. Refreshing or closing the relevant Monkeytype page ends the lifetime of that page’s temporary cache. The extension does not write practice content or activity progress to chrome.storage.local, and it does not create a persistent lookup history.
Display settings remain in the current browser until you change them, restore defaults, or remove the extension. “Reset defaults” in the popup replaces your existing preferences with the default settings. Removing the extension deletes its local settings. After removal, refresh or close any open Monkeytype pages to end the scripts that were already running in those pages.
4. Display toggle and site access
The extension’s site access is limited to https://monkeytype.com/* and https://www.monkeytype.com/*. Its page script reads the information described above only to provide word-by-word definitions and pronunciation transcriptions in the practice area. It does not access other websites.
Turning off “Definitions & phonetics” hides the Chinese text and pronunciation transcriptions and stops dictionary lookups. To prevent mistyped characters from replacing the original words, the page script still identifies practice words and the current word position in memory. To stop this page access completely, disable or remove the extension in Chrome, or revoke its access to the relevant sites, then refresh or close any Monkeytype pages that are already open.
The storage permission is used only to save display settings. The extension does not request permissions for browsing history, cookies, network request interception, or access to all websites.
5. Permitted use and Limited Use
MonkeyTranslation’s use of information obtained through Chrome APIs and the Monkeytype page complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. This information is used only to provide word-by-word Chinese definitions and pronunciation transcriptions, position the text, and save display preferences. It is not used for advertisements, user profiling, credit assessment, lending decisions, or other unrelated purposes.
The extension does not sell, transfer, or share this information with third parties, and it does not allow the developer to remotely read practice content on your device through the extension.
6. Contact and policy updates
